Martian soil appears able to support life

Thu Jun 26, 2008 9:19pm BST

By Jill Serjeant

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - "Flabbergasted" NASA scientists said on Thursday that Martian soil appeared to contain the requirements to support life, although more work would be needed to prove it.

Scientists working on the Phoenix Mars Lander mission, which has already found ice on the planet, said preliminary analysis by the lander's instruments on a sample of soil scooped up by the spacecraft's robotic arm had shown it to be much more alkaline than expected.

"We basically have found what appears to be the requirements, the nutrients, to support life whether past present or future," Sam Kounaves, the lead investigator for the wet chemistry laboratory on Phoenix, told journalists.

"It is the type of soil you would probably have in your back yard, you know, alkaline. You might be able to grow asparagus in it really well. ... It is very exciting for us."

Senator Obama,(Concerning Your FISA Bill Opinion)

I Disagree with Your FISA Bill opinion !

I will NOT Contribute Money To Your Campaign Because Of This position..

I want to..But,I Can't..

Not Until You Vote Against The FISA Bill If It Still Has Telecom Immunity In It !

Or,Strip Telecom Immunity From The Bill !

It Is A Shame Because I Am A Democrat..

We Can Protect Our Country WITHOUT Breaking The Law or,Giving Away The 4th Amendment !

And,Have You Forgotten Senator Obama That The Bush Administration and The Telecoms Started This Illegal Wiretapping BEFORE 9/11 ? !

They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security.

Uphold The Constitution !
And,
Uphold The Rule Of Law !

Thank you,M..A Democrat..

Reality Check !

We Need Clean Alternative Energy Sources,Not More Drilling Off Our Coastline !

We Can't Drill Ourselves Out Of Oil Dependence !

Coastal Drilling Will Have Zero Effect On Gas Prices !

The Only One Coastal Drilling Helps Is The Major Oil Companies !
They Want Those Oil Leases,Too !
They Already Have Many Oil Land-leases That They Haven't Drilled On..
Why Haven't The Drilled There If They Are So Concerned About Lower
The Price Of Gas ?

Just Another Rethug Diversion !

Senator Dodd,(Concerning The FISA Bill & Your Filibuster)

Please oppose the FISA Bill passage in The Senate !

If you do not,I will be forced Not to contribute to your Presidental Campaign !

*******
Chris Dodd and Russ Feingold released this statement (via e-mail):

"This is a deeply flawed bill, which does nothing more than offer retroactive immunity by another name. We strongly urge our colleagues to reject this so-called ‘compromise’ legislation and oppose any efforts to consider this bill in its current form. We will oppose efforts to end debate on this bill as long as it provides retroactive immunity for the telecommunications companies that may have participated in the President’s warrantless wiretapping program, and as long as it fails to protect the privacy of law-abiding Americans.

"If the Senate does proceed to this legislation, our immediate response will be to offer an amendment that strips the retroactive immunity provision out of the bill. We hope our colleagues will join us in supporting Americans’ civil liberties by opposing retroactive immunity and rejecting this so-called ‘compromise’ legislation."

Sen. Ron Wyden announced that he will oppose cloture for wiretapping bill:

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), a senior member of the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, announced today that he would oppose new legislation amending the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) due to his continued opposition to a provision that would grant blanket retroactive immunity to any telecommunications company that participated in the President’s warrantless wiretapping program.

"This is not the first time that the President has pressured Congress into interfering in federal court cases to cover-up his attempts to secretly rewrite the law. Congress’s previous attempts to bail-out the President—from the Detainee Treatment Act to the Military Commissions Act—have not only failed to solve the legal mess, but have often provided cover for the Administration’s failed counterterrorism policies," said Wyden.

"I see no reason for Congress to grant blanket immunity to companies that went along with the President’s wiretapping program for the better part of six years, even as it became increasingly clear that the legal foundation for this program was built on sand," Wyden continued. "It is not the role of Congress to substitute its judgment for the judgment of the courts. And while this bill offers the illusion of a fair judicial process, in reality, as the House Republican Leadership has noted, this is a mere ‘formality.’" ...

To Senator Feinstein,(Concerning Upcoming FISA Vote In The Senate)

Senator Feinstein,

Never appease political bullies, President Bush admonished at the Israeli Knesset," MSNBC's Keith Olbermann opened. "Oddly, House Democrats chose to ignore him on the subject of dealing with him."

Constitutional expert Jonathan Turley sees a "very frightening bill" in a proposed "compromise," currently in the House, that would update the 1978 Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act to effectively grant immunity from civil lawsuits to telecommunications companies that agreed to spy on their customers as part of the National Security Agency's warrantless wiretapping program, starting shortly (before) the World Trade Center attacks in 2001. If the White House asked a phone company to spy with its assurance that it was legal, the measure says, that's enough to dismiss a case.

Congressional Democrats, Turley went on, knew about surveillance and torture programs, but were politically unable to oppose them at the same time they were touting themselves to the public as defenders of civil liberties. The bill, he said, is part of a campaign of collusion between Congress and the Bush administration, immunizing not only the telecommunications companies, but the administration and any members of Congress, on either side of the aisle, that may have been involved.

"The proposed FISA deal is not a compromise; it is a capitulation," Senator Russ Feingold said today. "The House and Senate should not be taking up this bill, which effectively guarantees immunity for telecom companies alleged to have participated in the President’s illegal program, and which fails to protect the privacy of law-abiding Americans at home.(Allowing courts to review the question of immunity is meaningless when the same legislation essentially requires the court to grant immunity.) (And under this bill, the government can still sweep up and keep the international communications of innocent Americans in the U.S. with no connection to suspected terrorists, with very few safeguards to protect against abuse of this power.) (Instead of cutting bad deals on both FISA and funding for the war in Iraq, Democrats should be standing up to the flawed and dangerous policies of this administration.")

"The Democrats never really were engaged in this," said Turley. "In fact, they repeatedly tried to cave in to the White House, only to be stopped by civil libertarians and bloggers."

"I think they're simply waiting to see if the public's interest will wane," he went on, referring to repeated attempts to float said legislation past the public. "This bill has quite literally no public value for citizens or civil liberties. It is reverse engineering, though the type of thing the Bush Administration's famous for, and now the Democrats are doing--that is, to change the law to conform to past conduct."

"It's what any criminal would love to do," Turley continued. "You rob a bank, go to the legislature, and change the law to say that robbing banks is lawful."

"People need to be very, very much aware of this bill," he charged. "What you're seeing in this bill is an evisceration of the Fourth Amendment of the Constitution. It is something that allows the President and the government to go into law-abiding homes, on their word alone--their suspicion alone--and to engage in warrantless surveillance.

("That's what the framers who drafted the Fourth Amendment wanted to prevent.")

Speaker Pelosi, ( The FISA Vote )

In addition to the immunity provision, civil liberties and privacy groups are opposed to the bill because they say it weakens oversight of the surveillance court and allows the Bush administration to initiate a wiretap without first seeking a warrant.

“It’s Christmas morning at the White House thanks to this vote,” said Caroline Fredrickson, director of the American Civil Liberties Union Washington Legislative Office. “The House just wrapped up some expensive gifts for the administration and their buddies at the phone companies. It is not a meaningful compromise, except of our constitutional rights. The bill allows for mass, untargeted and unwarranted surveillance of all communications coming in to and out of the United States. The courts’ role is superficial at best, as the government can continue spying on our communications even after the FISA court has objected. Democratic leaders turned what should have been an easy FISA fix into the wholesale giveaway of our Fourth Amendment rights.

Congressman Maurice Hinchey, (D-NY), who voted against the surveillance bill, said he understands there is need to update the 1977 FISA law in light of the technological advancements to communications over the past 30 years. But “sacrificing our basic civil liberties and granting de facto immunity to telecommunication companies that may have violated the law to appease the Bush administration is simply unacceptable.”

In a strange twist, Sen. Arlen Specter, (R-Penn.), sparred with Pelosi over the extraordinary powers the Democrats’ bill grants to the White House, saying the legislation does not appear to prevent the White House from initiating surveillance without a court order.

“This proposal dodges" that, Specter said.

Wonder if they have lay-away ? I wish..

Congresswoman Davis,(Part Deux,FISA)

Please Vote No On New FISA Bill !

You may have heard already that Republicans and Democrats in the House have reached what they're calling a "compromise" bill on FISA reform.

But it's not a compromise. It's a cop-out.

Congress had a chance to stand up for our rights -- and for the Constitution -- and deny immunity to telecommunications companies that may have helped the Bush administration spy on Americans without warrants.

They had a chance -- but this "compromise" doesn't do it.

The bill -- which the House may vote on as early as today -- ties the hands of the district courts on the question of immunity. It fails to guarantee individualized warrants. And it puts all of this and more on the books through 2012 -- the tail end of the next administration.

Please Uphold The Constitution !

Please Uphold The Rule Of Law !

We Can Protect Our Country Without Breaking The Law !

Remember the old saying,

Don't Do The Crime If You Can't Do The Time !

What? Does this only Count for Regular Americans and Not Our Elected Officials ? ?

Please Vote No On The New FISA Bill !

Thank you,M.

Congresswoman Davis,(Vote Against The New FISA Bill)

Please Vote No On The New FISA Bill.

It fails to hold the Bush-Cheney Administration accountable for its illegal wiretapping program.

We must do everything we can to protect Americans from the Bush-Cheney Administration's erosion of our civil liberties and callous disregard for the rule of law -- and this new FISA bill fails that test.

Please Do what is right for the American People.
Not what is right for The Telecoms and The Bush-Cheney Administration.

The Bush-Cheney Administration is just worried about if they have to go to court concerning these and other abuses of power.

Please Uphold The Constitution !

Please Uphold The Rule Of Law !

Thank you,M.

Ps.Please don't let me and others down.
Breaking the Law is Not how you defend Our Country !

My Latest Email to Senator Feinstein About Impeachment !

Senator Feinstein,

It Is NOT Too Late To Impeach

Most Americans know that Bush, Cheney and the boys have committed impeachable offenses.

But they assume it is "too late to impeach" them.

Are they right?

Well, in 1876, Secretary of War General William Belknap (who served in the administration of Pres. Ulysses Grant), accused of accepting a bribe, resigned just hours before the House was scheduled to consider articles of impeachment. The House went ahead and unanimously impeached him, and by a vote of 37-29 the Senate rejected the argument that Belknap’s resignation should abort the case.

Indeed, numerous constitutional experts have stated that Bush and Cheney can be impeached even after they are out of office (see this, for example).

If articles of impeachment can be introduced even after Bush and Cheney are out of office, it is obviously not too late to introduce them now, while they are still in office.

What Good Would It Do?

Many people respond, "I know we can do it, but what good would it do?"

Well, for one thing, it could prevent war against Iran or another Middle Eastern country.

And it might prevent a false flag attack.

But there is another important reason to impeach. Impeachment was designed to be a deterrent, not just a punishment. The Founding Fathers included impeachment provisions in the Constitution so that if a president tried to act like a king, Congress could nip the tyrannical impulse in the bud, and tell all future presidents "Don't try it . . . We'll stop you!"

Unless Bush, Cheney and the whole lot of them are impeached, Congress will be ignoring the wishes of the framers and instead be loudly saying to future administrations "Go ahead . . . Bush and Cheney got away with it, and so can you".

As Professor Kalt of Michigan State University College of Law writes:

Please go to the link..It has alot of Good information Links in the article..

And,your excuse to not Impeach because it would be decisive or that Congress just doesn't have enough time Just Doesnt Cut It,Senator !

Neither does your FISA Compromise....The FISA Court is Nothing But A Slam Dunk for Telecom Immunity ! And,you know it !
Please Stop trying to deceive the Voting public !

Speaker Pelosi Are You Colluding ?

Speaker Pelosi,

The leadership knew and were complicit in the illegal/unconstitutional behavior.

That sentence in bold explains everything.

Did Pelosi and Reid give Bush their OK for his crimes?

Why else would they not want his crimes exposed?

Rumor has it Bush can't pardon anyone if impeachment is underway,
so maybe Pelosi and Reid might need a pardon when the truth comes out?

Is that why Pelosi is protecting Bush?
**
What's the Truth Speaker Pelosi ?

Is this collusion ?

It Sure looks Like It !

Because Your Excuse of not wanting it to be a diversion from what Congress is trying to accomplish and That it's Divisive Just Doesn't Cut It !

With Republican Obstructionism You Guys Can't Get Anything Accomplished Anyways..

Again,What Is The Truth Speaker Pelosi ?

What Is The Real Reason You Won't Put Impeachment Back On The Table ?

Millions Of Americans Want to Know Why !

As An American And A Democrat I Want To Know Why Too !

Because I Totally Disagree With Your Opinion !

Tell Us The Truth !
The American People Are Very Forgiving !

Please At The Very Least Start Investigations !

Because If You Don't Think That The President Bush and Vice President Cheney Have Not Broken The Law and Circumvented The Constitution..
You Ought To Just Hang It Up and Resign..

All Your Doing Is Creating A Precedent !

Please For Gods Sake Start:

Upholding The Constitution !
and.
Uphold The Rule Of Law !

Because You Surely Are Not Now Or In The Past Done These Two Things !

Hoping For A Response..

Speaker Pelosi,Part Deux

Speaker Pelosi,

There is no doubt the Bush administration is guilty of treason and sedition.

Look at his quote about the Constitution, the very foundation of the United States government.

"Stop throwing the Constitution in my face.

It's just a God damn piece of paper."

George W. Bush

Uphold The Constitution !

Uphold The Rule Of Law !

Thank you,M..A Democrat..

Speaker Pelosi,

Madam Speaker,

I am watching and listening to Rep -Ohio Dennis Kucinich read out his 47-count resolution to impeach President Bush.

I demand that you bring this to the house for vote until it passes! Failure to follow your oath to protect the Constitution would make you complicit in his crimes when he is finally investigated.

Do it today or tomorrow. We have wasted too much time with any other sensibilities. NOW PELOSI. Your people demand it of you!

Uphold The Rule Of Law !

Uphold The Constitution !

Please,Please Do Your Job !

What Are You Waiting For ?

Do You Care Nothing For Our Constitution ?

Your Just Going To Be A Black Mark In History

Because You Were More Worried About Re-Elections

Than The Constitution And The Rule Of Law !

Please,Please Take Up The Impeachment Of President Bush In The House Now !

Thank you,M..A Democrat..

Thanks Fernando. :)

well we got it finally, but in a reduced format, only randy, and al franken and malloy for some reason, the rest was filled with some local food show and other nonsense, no majority report, which didn't make a difference to me since i listened online anyway and with podcasts, but yes it was exciting at the time, driving late at night if i happened to be out, turn on the radio and hear malloy, gave me a thrill everytime (being used to listening to malloy on a funky old laptop with dial-up!)
