Subject: killing Medicare and Social Security

-

Bart,

Under W. the Reps tried to "privatize" Social Security, and they are similarly trying to privatize Medicare
(see the Ryan "budget"). You might wonder why; the total amount of money is not large by Wall Street standards.

The Supreme Court debate on Obamacare gives us a clue. If Social Security and Medicare are privatized,
the government will be creating a mandate on how people spend their money (how much needs to be invested,
how much needs to be put towards retirement, etc.), and given control of the collection process to a private industry.

In front of the Supreme Court, GOP attorneys are claiming Obamacare is unconstitutional because it is a government
mandate on how people spend their money, with the collection process delegated to a private industry.

So they believe that, if they can get these programs privatized, they can completely eliminate them!
That's been a goal of the far right since 1935 (for Social Security) and 1965 (for Medicare).

Linesmen Can't Blow The Whistle On Clowe -- Is It Time For A Rule Change?

by Niesy on Apr 6, 2012 2:00 PM PDT

As every hockey fan who's awake on planet Earth by now probably knows, Sharks forward Ryane Clowe prevented an odd-man rush by the Kings in a tie game late in the third period last night. While still on the bench, he leaned over the boards and used his stick to bat the puck away from Jarret Stoll. No ref made the call.

The Kings were on a power play at the time. Had Clowe been detected, the Kings would have had a two man advantage for half of a minute, and finished out most of the period in a crucial game with the man advantage. Instead, the game went on to overtime and then a shootout, possibly affecting the race for the division title.

While our fans are furious that four men in stripes missed such a blatant penalty--after all, someone should be watching the puck, right?--it turns out that the linesmen can't make that call.

I think it's time to change that rule. Here are my thoughts on the subject. Hopefully, this rundown will also answer any of your questions.

Let's go to the video:

A man whose lies helped to make the case for invading Iraq – starting a nine-year war costing more than 100,000 lives and hundreds of billions of pounds – will come clean in his first British television interview tomorrow.

"Curveball", the Iraqi defector who fabricated claims about Iraq's weapons of mass destruction, smiles as he confirms how he made the whole thing up. It was a confidence trick that changed the course of history, with Rafid Ahmed Alwan al-Janabi's lies used to justify the Iraq war.

Federal judge: Montana blogger is not journalist

--

*This Sucks ! (Allegedly)

*******

AP - By JEFF BARNARD

Dec.7th 2011

A federal judge in Oregon has ruled that a Montana woman sued for defamation was not a journalist when she posted online that an Oregon lawyer acted criminally during a bankruptcy case, a decision with implications for bloggers around the country.

Crystal L. Cox, a blogger from Eureka, Mont., was sued for defamation by attorney Kevin Padrick when she posted online that he was a thug and a thief during the handling of bankruptcy proceedings by him and Obsidian Finance Group LLC.

U.S. District Judge Marco Hernandez found last week that as a blogger, Cox was not a journalist and cannot claim the protections afforded to mainstream reporters and news outlets.

Although media experts said Wednesday that the ruling would have little effect on the definition of journalism, it casts a shadow on those who work in nontraditional media since it highlights the lack of case law that could protect them and the fact that current state shield laws for journalists are not covering recent developments in online media.
